Friday Faves: Social Media, Casino Parties and a Taste of Team Ridiculous

It’s Friday! We’re hoping you get to explore someplace amazing this weekend… something along the lines of the photo above.

We’ve seen some big social media initiatives this week, being used to do everything from raising awareness to helping out a friend. Pepsi went all out and launched the Refresh Project, the National Park Conservation Association turned to its social networks to talk about the latest budget shortfall and eco bloggers and green-minded folk across the internet reached out to help pay writer Derek Markham’s hospital bills.

Meanwhile, our friends over at The Kamchatka Project are planning a one-of-a-kind event to raise money for their conservation awareness trip to the Kamchatka Peninsula. If you live in the Portland area, put March 13, 2010 on your calendar. It’s going to be a night of gambling, salmon and espionage… that’s right, it’s the To Russia With Love Casino Night. Door prizes, raffle items, drinks and more! More info and tickets can be found here. Speaking of salmon, read this article and five easy tips on how to take action to save them!

We’ve also been filling our week with amazing photo essays. Thanks to Matador Network for always finding up and coming travel photographer that take amazing photos like these.

And how could we forget? The Joy Trip Project published a wrap-up piece about social media use at the recent Outdoor Retailer and our very own Emily Nuchols was quoted.

Two of the most talked about exhibitors weren’t brands but non-profit organizations, 1% For The Planet and The Conservation Alliance. With the help of key influencers who support these groups the issues of wildlife conservation and environmental conservation became top-of-mind.
“Social media makes the connection between brands, causes and adventurers clearer than ever before,” said Emily Nuchols, an industry influencer and a principle at Under Solen Media. “It’s not about who gets the most action on Twitter, it’s about who uses their social media to take action on things that matter. We believe in the power of social media to make positive change, and we believe in people who are passionate about their causes — be they businesses, advocates or adventurers.”

And what’s the best part about this Friday? We’re looking forward to some exciting things that are going to happen next week. We can’t tell you just yet, but stay tuned! In the meantime though, be sure to check out the slightly absurd site started by our good friend Dave. Team Ridiculous: We are going to awesome your socks off.

Now we’re off to do a snow dance in the hopes of inviting better skiing weather!

The week after Outdoor Retailer is always blurry, including lots of follow-up, sleep and getting back into the groove of life. Our treatment for post-OR is to hit the mat, take some deep breaths, a sip of wine on focus on causes that move us and inspire us to do the work that we do… And a little laughter always helps too!

Friday Faves: Outdoor Retailer Madness!

In the midst of Outdoor Retailer Winter Market craziness, we found a couple of minutes to upload some photos and write a quick little Friday Faves! So what are we digging out here in SLC?

1. Kicked off the morning at the Conservation Alliance breakfast. Inspired by all the great things this awesome organization has taken on in the last year. Here’s just one of the slides from this morning’s presentation:

2. We dropped by the Keen booth where they’re donating $10 to Haiti relief efforts for every person that gets a polaroid shot and posts it on the HybridLife wall. All we had to do was write where we wanted to travel to… guess what the Under Solen answer was? Everywhere!

3. Digging the cool new products from Innate — some awesome re-purposed bags that use leftover materials from sleeping pads, etc.

Now we’re just counting down to happy hour

Friday Faves: Protecting Wild Places and Helping Haiti

James Balog of the Extreme Ice Survey will speak next Friday at The Conservation Alliance's breakfast in Salt Lake City. The Extreme Ice Survey is the most wide-ranging glacier study ever conducted using ground-based, real-time photography.

This week at Under Solen, we’ve been gearing up for next week’s Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City. While all of our heads will be swimming with meetings, happy hours and gear, we’re hoping to keep our eye on the the thread that holds all of this together — protecting those incredible wild places that keep our industry alive and kicking.

So, we thought we’d give a shout-out to a couple great groups that are walking the walk this week.

The Conservation Alliance

Since thier founding in 1989, the Conservation Alliance has contributed more than $7 million to conservation projects throughout North America — protecting more than 49 million acres of land, stop or remove 27 dams, and preserve access to thousands of miles of rivers and several climbing areas. The Alliance is a group of outdoor industry companies that disburses its collective annual membership dues to grassroots environmental organizations to protect threatened wild habitat, preferably where outdoor enthusiasts recreate. The Alliance was founded in 1989 by industry leaders REI, Patagonia, The North Face, and Kelty, who shared the goal of increasing outdoor industry support for conservation efforts.

Mark your calendars for their awesome breakfast at 7a.m. on Friday at the Marriot. We know it’s early, but this will give you the inspiration you need to get revved up for a day at the show. Look forward to founder and director of The Extreme Ice Survey, James Balog to give a stunning look at the impact abrupt climate change is having on the world’s glaciers.

And make sure to stop by participating booths to support the Alliance! Whether you’re looking for some wild inspiration, a rockin’ party or some sweet gear that benefits a great cause – they have packed line-up.

The Epicocity Project and iLCP Flathead RAVE

The Epicocity Project’s thought-provoking new film — Flathead Wild — will premiere at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival at the Nevada Theater in Nevada City, Calif. Saturday, Jan. 16 before going on tour.

Proposed mountaintop removal mining in southeastern British Columbia, Canada is threatening one of America’s most endangered rivers and one of North America’s wildest remaining valley — The Flathead. Flathead Wild follows the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP) as they descend on the Flathead River Valley, along with local conservation groups, to take breathtaking and iconic images of the threatened ecosystem. These images then act as tools for the Flathead coalition to help tip the scales in favor of protection and conservation.

Flathead Wild is also now available online. Help Epicocity spread the word by linking to the film on your blog, Facebook and Twitter and send it to your friends and family!

Helping Haiti

And we wanted to once again highlight how we can help folks in Haiti. Earlier this week, an earthquake registering 7.0 on the Richter scale hit Haiti. Centered just outside of the populated capital, Port-au-Prince, the quake’s effects have been devastating. Within less than 24 hours the outpouring of international support has been impressive.

So how can you take part? Here’s just a small collection of what’s out there.

Friday Faves: Kicking Off a New Year With Bling, Prizes and Travel

2010 is off to a rocking start, and here at Under Solen we couldn’t be happier about our first full week that involved giving away prizes and getting the word out about submitting to an amazing film festival.

We dove into some social media humor as well as facts this week. It all comes down to one important question: would you wear a Twitter bling? We’re still debating that question, but in the meantime, one of our resolutions for 2010 involves taking more time to be creative and get outside. Thankfully we managed both!

In the rest of the blogosphere, the epic trend of “Top 10” and “Best Of” themes continues. We learned about landfills (these photos will make you rethink just what you throw out), watched epic fails and dreamed about visiting hip hostels.

And we know that most of the world is suffering extremely low temperatures (we’re still wishing for snow here in Portland), so wouldn’t it be nice to win a trip to Costa Rica? Yes, we think so (check out one of our fave travel blogs Nomadic Matt for more details).

Last but not least, since we’re always dreaming of National Parks, we think this is one of the coolest things we’ve seen lately. Watch and enjoy!

Happy Friday!

Friday Faves: Tis Still The Season

Another crazy week here at Under Solen HQ that was kicked off with a classic Swedish advent coffee (glögg included). We’ve got lots of wintry adventures in the works, including some sweet slopes and snowshoe routes; we might spend a large part of our time invested in social media, but we’re equally committed to unplugging and spending time outdoors enjoying everything that nature’s got to offer!

But along with adventure planning, here are some of this week’s faves:

We kicked off our Profile series, where we interview movers and shakers in the world of new media. We’re very thankful that eco-journalist and new media celeb Adam Shake volunteered to be our first interviewee, talking about his company Simple Earth Media.

Being a female run business, we’re always excited to work with other super cool, progressive ladies, which is why we’re head over heels about our two latest projects we’re working on: Epic Wheel Works and She Jumps. Be sure to check out both.

Tis the season, and although we try to steer as far as we can away from traditional consumption, we do believe in putting some dollars towards good causes, and we’re excited to announce that the amazing fundraising initiative Passports With Purpose has almost reached double its original goal! (You can help them raise the last few dollars by going here… there are some sweet prizes up for grabs.)

And because we’ve always got travel on the mind: ever wonder what English sounds like to those who don’t speak it? Watch this video to find out.
